There are eight common types of coffee makers, and the right one depends on how many cups you make, how much time you have and how you like your coffee to taste. This guide explains how each one works, compares them side by side, and gives you the grind, ratio and timing for every method.
Quick pick: a drip machine for several cups with no effort, a pod machine for one fast cup, a French press or pour-over for the best flavor per dollar, and an espresso machine if you want lattes and cappuccinos at home.
Types of coffee makers compared
| Type | How it works | Brew time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drip machine | Heats water and drips it over grounds in a filter basket | 4 to 8 min | Several cups at once, hands-off mornings |
| Pour-over | You pour hot water over grounds in a cone by hand | 3 to 4 min | Clean, bright coffee; one or two cups |
| French press | Grounds steep in water, then a mesh plunger separates them | 4 min | Full-bodied coffee, no paper filters |
| Single-serve pod | Pierces a sealed pod and pushes hot water through it | About 1 min | Speed and convenience, one cup at a time |
| Espresso machine | Forces hot water through finely ground coffee at high pressure | 25 to 30 sec per shot | Espresso, lattes, cappuccinos |
| Moka pot | Steam pressure on the stovetop pushes water up through the grounds | About 5 min | Strong, espresso-style coffee without a machine |
| Percolator | Cycles boiling water up and over the grounds repeatedly | 7 to 10 min | Big batches, camping |
| Cold brew maker | Grounds steep in cold water for hours | 12 to 24 h | Smooth, low-acid iced coffee |
Drip coffee makers
The default in most kitchens. Fill the reservoir, add a filter and medium-ground coffee, and press start. Look for a model that reaches 195 to 205ยฐF and finishes in four to eight minutes, the range the Specialty Coffee Association uses for its brewer certification (summary of the SCA Gold Cup standard). Grind size matters more than most people think: see drip coffee grind size.
Setup and care guides: how to use a coffee pot, how to use a Mr. Coffee maker, how to start a Cuisinart coffee maker, how to set the time on a Cuisinart and how to use a Cuisinart with a built-in grinder. For big households, compare a 15-cup coffee maker; for no plastic contact, an all-glass coffee maker or a stovetop drip maker.
Pour-over
A cone, a paper filter and a kettle. You control the water temperature and pour speed, which is why pour-over coffee tastes cleaner and brighter than most machines. A gooseneck kettle makes the slow, even pour much easier.
French press
Add coarse grounds, pour in hot water, wait four minutes and press. The metal mesh lets oils through, so French press coffee is richer and heavier than filtered coffee. New to it? Start with how to assemble a French press.
Single-serve pod machines
Keurig and Nespresso machines trade some flavor and higher cost per cup for speed. Our guides cover how to reset a Keurig, setting the time on a Keurig Duo, using a Keurig with ground coffee, and cleaning: with vinegar, the water tank and taking it apart. Nespresso owners: how to use a Nespresso machine and the Vertuo.
Espresso machines
Real espresso needs high pressure and a fine, even grind, so the grinder matters as much as the machine. Learn the basics in how to make espresso and how to use a Breville espresso machine, compare models in Barista Touch Impress vs Barista Touch, and read our Aqua Barista and Lagom P64 grinder write-ups. Want blended drinks? See frappuccino machines.
Moka pots and percolators
Both brew on the stove. A moka pot makes a small amount of strong, espresso-like coffee; a percolator makes a large pot by cycling water through the grounds. Percolator owners should read 16-cup percolators and how to clean a coffee percolator.
Grind, ratio and timing for every method

The Specialty Coffee Association’s benchmark is about 55 grams of coffee per liter of water, roughly 1:18 (source). Use it as a starting point and adjust to taste: stronger with more coffee, weaker with less. A grind size chart helps you match grind to method.
Milk frothing
For lattes and cappuccinos you need steamed or frothed milk. Heat milk to about 140 to 155ยฐF for sweet, silky foam; see milk frothing temperature, froth vs foam, how to foam milk with a steam wand and using the Nespresso frother. Handheld frothers work too: Stirmix frothers, Instant frother replacement whisks and frothers for matcha.
Tea and kettles
For tea and pour-over, an electric kettle is the fastest way to hot water. If you are on a low-power circuit, see electric kettles under 1,000 watts; for stovetop style, our Balduzzi tea kettle review; and to keep loose tea fresh, a Japanese tea tin. Also see our electric jug guide.
Water at home: dispensers, jugs and filters
Coffee is about 98% water, so the water you start with matters. For dispensers, compare Brio vs Avalon, Brio vs Primo and Avalon vs Primo, or troubleshoot with Brio dispenser beeping and the water dispenser manual. Jug sizes are in 5-gallon water jug dimensions and 5-gallon bottle dimensions.
For filtration, start with how reverse osmosis works and Brita vs reverse osmosis, then maintenance: changing RO filters and how long RO filters last.
Mini fridges for drinks
A compact fridge keeps drinks and milk close to your coffee station. Measure first with mini fridge dimensions, then see the largest mini fridges and a coffee bar with a mini fridge.

Frequently asked questions
What type of coffee maker makes the best coffee?
Of all the types of coffee makers, pour-over and French press usually taste best for the money because you control every variable. A good drip machine that reaches the right temperature comes close with far less effort.
How much coffee per cup?
About 14 grams of coffee for a 250 ml (8.5 oz) mug, based on the SCA benchmark of 55 g per liter. That is about 2 to 3 level tablespoons of ground coffee, depending on the grind.
Is a pod machine worth it?
If speed matters more than cost per cup, yes. Pods cost several times more per cup than ground coffee, and flavor is less fresh.
What is the difference between espresso and drip coffee?
Espresso is brewed under high pressure in about 30 seconds with a fine grind, producing a small, concentrated shot. Drip coffee uses gravity, a medium grind and several minutes.
